Event #4
Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending a zoom presentation relating for Pixar. The presentation was mainly a discussion with an artist and illustrator who works at the company. That artist was Paul Abadilla.
Paul is a artist at the studio who works as a set artist for many of Pixar's films. He has worked with the studio since 2012 on "Brave" to one of their most recent works with their movie "Soul".
Abadilla talked about how he got started and what some of his inspirations were, but mostly he talked about the process of making the set design for "Soul". As someone who saw the movie and loved it, it was great to listen to the process in creating an important part of it. I found the animation and design of both the soul world and the real world to be fantastic and a perfect blend of abstract and realism.
To hear him talk about the approach they had to both worlds and to make each of them unique in their own way I found it to be very interesting. Especially for the creation of the soul world. I think the most fun piece of information of the creation of the look of the movie was that the designs of the humans were inspired by English artist and cartoonist Ronald Searle, who was someone I instantly knew when mentioned.
The presentation also mentioned internships at Pixar as well which I plan to at least look into, but the presentation was a great insight into what goes into set design for Pixar.
