Sprite Fright

 Sprite Fright - Blender Studio

Today I saw a short film I've been wanting to check out for awhile but just haven't had the time called "Sprite Fright".

"Sprite Fright" is a 80's inspired horror/comedy that follows Ellie, a nature loving teen, and her assigned study group of stuck together for a school project and wander into the woods to study nature. When the rest of the group messes with the surroundings nature strikes back in the form of small, mischievous, smurf-esque mushroom men who want revenge for tampering with mother nature.

The short isn't anything overly complicated, but it's a fun, darkly comedic watch with PG-13 level gore that subverted my expectations. Which is something you don't really see in a lot of animated projects, especially when it comes to animated horror. I think what really stood out to me the animation style. The film was animated in Blender, which I can't believe how high the quality of that program can deliver, and released via Blender's Youtube channel. The unique thing about the animation style is that it reduced the number of frame rates used to animate a character. Similarly to something like Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse or The Peanuts Movie this gives the animation a choppy, yet dynamic style.

Everyone did such a great job with the production of this short and I look forward to seeing how Blender shows what else they can with filmmaking with their program.
